Answers to Slang Phrases, Some Questions We have and Editorial

Answer: Where did the phrase “Whole Nine Yards” come from?

We thought this came from the sport of football or some other sport where yards were part of the measurement.  Then one day we were watching Netflix and there was a show where some dudes were restoring a P-51 Mustang back to the original configuration.  (See picture above for P-51).  When P-51 pilots returned from a mission they usually went into a debriefing and they would be asked if they used “the whole nine yards” if they encountered a “dog-fight” with a German plane.  The ammunition for a P-51 Mustang is stored in the wing layered in a container that is 9 Yards long. If the pilot used all his ammunition in the “dog-fight” then he used the whole nine yards or in other words, he used all his ammunition.

Answer: Where did the phrase”Short End of the Stick” come from?

Found this answer on “Antiques Road-show” in a British version where a lady brought two sticks that she had no clue what they were but they were old.  The expert said this was the first time he had ever see these.  In the 1300’s when a loan was made between two gentlemen they notched a stick approximately four inches wide and depending on how deep the notches were determined the amount of the loan.  Then they split the stick and the person that owed the other guy the amount indicated had his stick shortened.  So the person with “the short stick” owed the other guy and this could be proved by placing the sticks next to each other.

Question:  Why do golfers look at the ball when they miss a putt?

The ball was aimed by the golfer and the golfer must have aimed wrong so looking at the ball indicates that the ball made the mistake when in fact the golfer was the cause.  Could it be that the golfer was in denial?  Are they looking for a gaping hole in the side of the ball that might have caused the miss-direction?  Are they looking to see if the ball is square and that’s why it went array?

Question:  Why do golf TV commentators always follow a compliment with a comment about a bad shot that the golfer might have been made sometime in their career.

The scenario is the commentator says “Wow! That was a great shot!” and then follow that comment with “I remember back in 1980 at the Masters when he had the same shot he hit it in the water and then attempted to play from the water and scored a quadruple boogie!”

Editorial:

Since Tiger Woods is back playing we watch plenty of golf and we believe that the golf commentators which are usually a bunch of one time golfers that could not keep up with the “real” pros.  Best example is Nick Faldo who was fairly famous at one time, but never great.  Just listen to Nick doing his commentary and you will hear the negativity in his comments.  Lots of “never, can’t or “no way”.  One time a reporter asked Tiger what he though about when he was putting and Tiger said “Nothing”.  We got this but this went miles above Nick’s head and he said “That is impossible.” Nick must not know that Tiger plays golf when he is in “the moment” and because he has made all the measurements and seen the angles for the putt the only thing left is to hit the putt so his mind is in a state of nothing.   We guess when Nick is over the putt he is thinking “If I miss this my kids will not go to college or if I miss left, I don’t think that will be a good putt coming back and I will probably miss my house payment and my family will be homeless and my parents will be disappointed in me and probably disown me and my family.  The queen will openly dismiss me as an English golfer and say that I am from Russia and that my family sneaked in to England back in the 1500’s with false papers….”  Then Nick has the balls to tell the viewing audience how the player we are watching should play the shot coming up.  The last thing the golfer wants to know is how Nick would play the shot because the golfer does not want to end his career being a golf commentator. We also sense quite a bit of animosity coming from the commentators who played golf when Tiger was at his height and winning just about everything which placed them in the background.

Last week we met a “Kat” and this is highly unusual for us because Kat’s are rare and after meeting this Kat we noticed that the Kat had a type of energy we have not encountered ever.  It was super serene with a touch of inquisitively.  Interesting we must say.

Thanks to all our friends who stop by and hope that the awesome mom’s out there had a great Mothers Day!  God bless all of you and thinks for stopping by.

We have nothing to say at this time but if you are out on a golf course be sure to listen for someone yelling “Fore”.  This means that a strong possibility exists that a small ball hit be the golfer coming your way has hit a ball that is off-line and coming your way.  The proper response would be to cover your head, fall to the ground if you are hit, and scream in pain so that the golfer who hit you will probably give you a golf glove with his/her autograph on it.

Questions / Statements / Venting from the Staff of Alaboutnothing

Because we constantly clearing our mind with one thing we wish to attain and that is “Nothingness”. There comes a time we need to know answers to some of our questions.  The clearing causes us to ask other people the answers either here or when we go out and about.  So here are some questions, and some statements / opinions, and finally some of our venting.  As we always “preach”, we are here to help and connect with other humans and we will continue to connect with all the AWESOME humans we meet along our journey.

Question:

We have wondered about this for a very long time.  In Chevrolet commercials they end with the slogan “Find new roads”.  What the heck does that mean?  Find new roads?  The car only runs on a new road? We have not seen a new road in years, so do they provide a map of new roads?  What is we need to take old roads to get to the new roads do they provide assistance?  We are Chevy fans, but we are confused abut this and have moved on to looking at the Dodge Demon, which in our opinion kicks ass on any road.

Question:

Have you ever noticed when watching a golf tournament on TV when the player hits the ball someone always yells out “In the hole!”?  Are there 18 paid people who stand at each hole and yell this phrase?  If so I want one of those jobs.  Do they pay well?  Do they get bonus if on a par three a player gets a hole in one and they yelled it?  This has to be a “sweet” job if you’re a golf fan.  Do they only work when the tournament is on TV?  Do they travel around to the different places the tournaments are played?

Question:

Do you miss Anthony Bourdain as much as we do?  His shows “Part Unknown” and “No Reservations” are still on TV and Netflix and we watch them every chance we get.  Anthony / Tony, a great story teller and would get out there past the tourist places in different countries with the “folks”.  Tony showed his human side often and we respected his opinion.

Question:

We were closely watching the Weather Channel during the hurricane Florence and we noticed one of the reports pronounced “Immediately” as “ammediately”.  Yes, more than once she used the “A” instead of the “I”.  Then we noticed more than one reporter on the Weather Channel and other news channels pronouncing “immediately” with an “A”. For us to notice this is huge because we often make “typos” and usually say nothing, but we had too on this one.

Question:

Why do we drive on a different side of the road than England?  Is it our way to say “in your face” to England?  After all, they once did own us a long time ago.  They also have many “round-a-bouts” and we have recently started using “round-a-bouts”, probably because it’s been found that traffic moves faster when a “round-a-bout” is in use.

Statement:

In some of our posts talking about the Vatican and or the Catholic Church, because we have our own belief system, we did not realize the impact the recent abusing of children by priests had on devoted Catholics.  The following link is from someone who is a devout Catholic and when we read her words, we could feel her pain, and they brought tears to our eyes.  Please read and join us in praying for a healing of the Catholic Church. The site is “Beauty Beyond Bones” (<<<click on name) and we like all the articles.

Statement:

Netflix is the greatest thing since sliced bread.  We have recently started watching Netflix and the variety of programs is HUGE and we even have discovered what people mean by “binge watching”.  So far we have “binge watched” “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” and “Magic for Humans”.  We have several others picked out, but we continue to check out other programs, especially the travel programs.  We have partially “binge watched” various stand up comics and have discovered that Dave Chappell is not for children’s viewing.  One thing we have learned about magicians is that when they do a trick, rather than attempting to figure out how they did it, we now know the answers is “they used magic.” (Saves brain cell space)

Statement:

Continuing with Netflix we watched one of our all time favorite people, David Lettermen has a show called “My Next Guess” and the first show is David interviewing President Obama and it was great.  We have found our minds are becoming more open by watching interviews of people we only know by names in the news.  Perfect example is Jay-Z.  We only know that Jay-z is a rapper and married to Beyonce.  That’s about it.  After watching David interview Jay-z we have become huge fans, not of his rapping, but of the human side of Jay-z.  Everything he talked about was right in line with what we believed.  We were surprised and happy all at the same time.  What and awesome person and it’s great to see there are forward thinking people out there changing our world.  Namaste Jay-Z.

Statement:

Netflix is the greatest thing since sliced bread >>>>>because the programs are commercial free!  We are already in “heaven” and now this is a perk.  We thank The Universe for creating someone who created Netflix.

Statement:

Tiger wood is back !!!

The Golf Channel or The Golf Gossip Channel – Karma

So folks all your hear these days is the name “Tiger Woods” and if you watch the Golf Channel they mention his name at least 500 times during a tournament.  Not only to they mention his name, they play older videos if his achievements on the links.  Even people in other sports are talking about the Tiger Woods comeback and yes folks, he is amazing and he is back to the golf world.  (The “G” is logo is for “gossip”)

We have been Tiger Woods fans since the first time he played on the professional tour and we knew then, this young man is going to be special.

He rose to number one in the world and stayed there for years.  Of course the Golf Channel promoted him to the maximum because he brought viewers to their channel.  Tiger was the greatest thing for golf like Michael Jordan was for basketball.  Then came a day when the new broke about Tiger being involved in some not so good personal problems that cost him his marriage and he quit playing golf.  We thought the Golf Channel would stay out of his personal problems and focus on the golf player, but no, The Golf Channel became the “The Golf Gossip Channel”.  They were on Tiger’s problems like flies on a fresh dog turd.  They had reporters outside his house and were repeating every bit of gossip that came to them, both true and not true.  It was a circus and The Golf Gossip Channel made it worse as the leaders.  We think they thought no way Tiger would return so they trashed him to the maximum.

Now comes the karma, what goes around comes around and now that Tiger is back and great the “The Golf Gossip Channel” at first was timid about his comeback and we even heard a few of the commentators saying no way he will make it and be any good.  These people must not be listening because Tiger said “This is a process and I need to learn all over again how to handle the actual playing in competition, so it might take a few weeks.”.  Then Tiger showed what he was talking about.  At first he missed some fairly easy shots, but and the weeks went on he got better and better and this last weekend he had a chance to win, but like he says, the process goes on.  The crowds this week were massive and last week at Valspar they had to expand the parking and all the other stuff that goes with crowd handling.  So now the “The Golf Gossip Channel” has eliminated the “Gossip” and is once again promoting Tiger in his comeback.  Since Tiger left nobody has filled the gap that Tiger left even though The Golf Channel promoted some really great young players, none matched Tiger and shown be the crowds now coming out to see Tiger.  We of course are dancing around our chair because he is back and we k new he would come back big time.

Now to the “The Golf Channel”, we are asking “When are you going to send a written apology to Tiger Woods?”  Remember when you were the main GOSSIP news channel focused on cheap shots at every chance.  This is Karma in action.  You did not think he would come back from losing his family, several back surgeries and losing his health.  But Tiger not only overcame terrible times and has “fixed” his family, his health, and is the favorite to win “The Masters”.   You came see on his face how happy he is and humble as one can be.  So Golf Channel, “When will you publicly apologize?”

Now if there is a cable channel like ESPN or some other sports network other than the low life Golf Channel you might want to consider making a contract with Tiger to telecast only Tiger woods playing a tournament.  Get some great commentators like the guys on CBS (Not Hicks) and have several cameras only following Tiger.  Maybe a reporter interviewing Tigers fans that are all around him as he plays or promoting “The Tiger Woods Foundation” where Tiger helps kids get a great education.  I know I would be tuned in and probably most of the Tiger woods fans in the world, yes the world knows who Tiger is.

So folks why not send a few million emails to The Golf Channel asking for an apology and a few billion emails to ESPN to telecast only Tiger Woods playing golf?  They could probably raise a few billion dollars for Tigers kids and communities that are in need of funds.

We have nothing else to report except we choose to send some emails soon and will look forward to the next tournament.  Thank you all for stopping by and we send our blessing to all of you.

tiger

It was a sweet victory today at Bay Hill where Tiger Woods won the Arnold Palmer tournament for the eighth time setting yet another record that will go down in the history books.  Tiger also moved to the #1 World ranking for the 11th time setting another record and also moves to the #1 ranking in the “Fed-X” ranks.  Next week is the Houston open, but Tiger won’t be there, however the following week is the Master and we are looking for another win.  Tiger is quickly moving toward the Sam Snead record for the most wins, and with a win at the Masters, moving ever so close to the Jack Nickolas of the most major victories.

We have nothing else to add at this time except “WTG Tiger!

American Lake Veterans Golf Course

Filed under: Golf — alaboutnothing @ 9:09 pm

This amazing golf course came to our attention while watching the Golf Channel over Thanksgiving weekend.  This is a golf course specifically for use by veterans of our military (USA).  What is even more amazing is the funds to cover running this course all come from private donations, no federal funding.  There are approximately one hundred and fifty grounds keepers and they are all volunteers and they are all veterans.

Back in 2001 this course was described as a “cow pasture” and the Pepper Roberts came along.  The day after Pepper retired he made American Lake his project.  To clean up the nine hole course and make it available to veterans and only veterans.  Needless to say he was totally successful and because of the success, they are going to add nine holes to the already existing nine holes to complete the eighteen holes.  Now in order for this to happen, they needed to re-design all the holes.  So they called Jack Nickolas who is a legendary golfer and high on the list as a golf course designer.  They asked Jack how much it would cost?  In the interview I saw the guy who was asking said, “Jack did not even pause. Jack said “no charge.”   Now folks I have to tell you that Jack Nichols a “class act.”  I blog about Tiger often on this site, but Jack is a leader in inspiration and Tiger is following his footsteps.

Please follow this link (Click here) and be sure to watch the videos.  The folks who run the course and the veterans who use the course are all inspirations.  Remember, these are the guys who go out into the world and protect our freedom.  They put their lives on the line each and everyday just so we can enjoy the freedom of living in the USA.

I have nothing else to add except to inform you that this golf course is the only one in the US dedicated to our veterans.  I find that amazing and a fact that needs to change.

Peace!
