Quit Smoking the Easy Way Part 1

xsmokingI am happy to report that this January marks 5 years since I last smoked a cigarette. An accomplishment I am very proud of and I am going to share with others who are attempting to quit smoking but struggling with the task. So if you are a non-smoker you might move on to another site, but then again you might wish to share this site to someone you know that is attempting to quit smoking.
I found that when I decided to quit, created the intention to quit smoking, and focused on the task at hand the solutions came my way quickly.

I was smoking one pack a day at the time, and I was going though a severe chest cold which seemed to a fairly regular event at back then. I also had been smoking for over five decades, yes folks, more than fifty years without ever seriously attempting to quit. So here is my solution to quitting which turned out to be easier than expected.

First I met a doctor that had organized a group of folks that under her supervision had quit smoking using a medication named Wellbutrin. The instructions were one pill a day for three days and then start with two pills a day and continue to smoke. When the third day arrived I had already cut down from 20 to 15 cigarettes a day. I found that I had a reaction to taking the second pill and the doctor said to just stay with the one a day. Within 10 days I was at 3 cigarettes a day and seemed to get stuck at three.

Then one day I was on my Facebook page when I saw a symbol on the right side that was a cigarette with a red crossed “X” over it. I stared at the symbol because I never click on those “pages you need to visit” symbols, but I went with a gut feeling and clicked on it. I then went to a page about quitting smoking by Alan Carr and it led me to a PDF download of a book named “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking” written by Alan Carr in 1985. I downloaded the file and read the book in one sitting. I have not smoked a cigarette since completing the book. (Thank you Allen)

What this book did for me was to point out that all the thoughts about why I liked smoking or why that cigarette with a cup of coffee first thing in the morning tasted so good, or yeah there is a chance of getting cancer, but not me, etc. The answer is those thoughts are coming from your ADDICTION! Yes your addiction is pointing out how much you enjoy smoking and how special you are for smoking without any issues and of course you are so special that cancer is not an option.

So the actual quitting was easy. I found the tough part was about 2-3 weeks later when I felt an urge for a cigarette when a situation occurred that when I was smoking, would smoke a cigarette. I have talked with other people who said this was the part that when they felt some stress, they automatically went back to smoking thinking they would attempt to quit at a later date. My though was “I did not quit smoking to go right back to it!” So what I did was I immediately noticed the situation that was causing the urge and then stopped what I was doing. I sat down and started a simple meditation where I focused on my in and out breath knowing that the urge would pass in about 20 seconds. Sure enough, it did and the next time the same situation came up the urge was non-existent. I did this ever time I had the smoking urge and eventually it was a rare event.

These days focusing on your breathing during a meditation is called “Mindfulness Meditation” and classes on how to do Mindfulness Mediation are being offered by most hospitals across the country (For a fee). American Airlines Flight 1366 – DFW to Memphis – 2010 Revisited

Over this Christmas holiday I was one of the travelers who took advantage of the low airfares on priceline.com.  I booked a round trip ticket from Memphis TN to San Jose CA and started the trip on United Airlines and the return was on American Airlines (AA).

To begin the United flight had a connection in Denver, which I normally avoid during the winter months, but this trip went great. I arrived on time and spent a great week with my family.

On my return to Memphis, the first leg of the AA flight to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) went fine.  We arrived on time at gate 18 at DFW.  I checked the screen for Flight 1366 and it showed the gate to be A17.  I thought “Great!  I only needed to walk about 20 feet for the connecting flight.”  Because I have taken several (hundred) flights over the years, I know that because DFW is a very large airport and if your connecting gate is in a different terminal it might take awhile to get there.  I also know that at DFW if you need to get to a different terminal they have a “Sky Link” shuttle train that runs between terminals because of the lengthy distance.

So I am sitting at Gate A17 waiting for the next flight and after about 15-20 minutes the desk attendant announced that the flight that was scheduled for a 4:45 PM departure was going to be delayed until 5:35 PM and the Gate has been changed to C27.  That’s it, nothing else was said.  Now this is where my experience at DFW came into play.  I knew I need to simply take the “Sky Link” Shuttle to get there in a timely manner.  The delay was no big deal, but I think the AA Desk Attendant should have given instructions to the other passengers as to what would be the best way to get to the C27 Gate which was very far away.  I would guess that at least 80% of the passengers on the flight were first time flyers and they had no clue other than walking to get to Gate C27.  I estimate that the walking distance from Gate A18 to C27 is about a mile. Even though Terminal C is right next to A, a person would have to leave A17 and proceed to A39 (22 Gates), then cross a walkway from A to C and then continue on to Gate C27 (27 Gates).  Keep in mind this is not a straight line walk, the terminals are curved so a 48 Gate walk is quite a long walk.

When I arrived at Gate C27 I talked to a few of the other passengers and found out that one lady was originally scheduled to take a flight to Memphis at around 2 PM and her flight was cancelled and she was moved to Flight 1366 for the 4:45 PM departure and now that was changed to 5:35 PM so she had been waiting around for about 3 hours.  Then I talked with a young fellow escorting his mother and he told me that his mother needed help to walk.  She was good for a short distance, but long distance was a problem.  He said that on this gate change he got lucky and when they were starting to walk from Gate A17 to C27 he noticed the “Sky Link” sign and asked another passenger what it was.  That is how they made the gate change, and that was a strain on his mother because of the walk.  I told him that if at Memphis he needs assistance for his mother to ask the AA attendant to call for either a wheelchair or for one of those special “Golf Cart” like vehicles for assistance for his mother.  This is my point folks, all these “special” assistance services are available in probably all airports but the passenger must ask the airline attendant or look up the services on the web for a particular airport.  I would think that over holidays when most of the travelers are either first time flyers or people who rarely fly, the airlines would volunteer the information to the passengers when a special circumstance comes in to play.  In this case the American Airline people were mute.

One more final tidbit of information is that when I was waiting at C27 I called an AAN team member that is in the aviation industry and asked him to find out what was going on.  He got back to me and said that flight 1366 originated in Phoenix and arrived at DFW on time and was at the airport a good 40 minutes when we arrived from San Jose.  He surmised that AA needed the plane for something else and did not know anything else.

To wrap up, we did leave at 5:35 PM and arrived in Memphis at approximately 7:00 PM.

I really did not appreciate the “games” American Airlines were playing.  What I think they did was cancelled the 2 PM flight because it wasn’t full and moved those passengers to the 1366 Flight at what was suppose to be a 4:45 PM departure.  Then when this flight wasn’t full, they delayed the flight to 5:35 PM.  AA obviously did not care about the inconvenience to the passengers after the long holiday and decided that their needs came before passengers.

The next time you get the spiel where the pilot thanks you for flying their airline because of all the choices you have, keep in mind that American Airlines really doesn’t care.  American Airlines has gone from the top of my list to the bottom as far as choices for airline travel.  To you folks  out there in cyber land remember that if you need help, just ask.

American Airlines – In it for the MONEY

Well folks, everyday is a learning experience and today I learned that the once great airline, American Airlines which happens to be the first airline I ever flew and the only airline I ever trusted my son to fly alone on, now SUCKS, yes folks, AMERICAN AIRLINES SUCKS!

We are flying on American Airlines on November 24 from SFO to PHX and we hope we don’t meet because we were up all night with a fever and woke up this morning with a scratchy voice and a sore throat so bad we can’t remember one this bad.  We are also sweating like there is no tomorrow.

We tried to change the dates, but AA doesn’t allow changes.  So I asked if we cancel will we get a refund ?  NO!  We kind of figured this, but gave it a shot.  We thought maybe because we are a senior citizen they would understand that sometimes we get sick quickly and should not be flying and make adjustments. NO!  So all you BABY BOOMERS out there in cyber-land pay attention American Airlines only ares about the all mighty buck, not you or your needs.

If you are on this flight be sure to wave when you hear someone cough so deep they almost pass out. Be sure to keep clear and remember the only reason we are flying is because a large chunk of money will be lost by this senior citizen because AA will not refund the fare.

There is still time left and maybe, just maybe we might “EAT” the money that we sacrificed for over a year to save for this trip and not go. Ruining other travelers holiday is not something we would normally do nor wish to do.  An airplane is a known to be one of the worst germ infested places to be in and we might get worse.  Soon as the fever clears we will decide.

If we do decide to book another flight when we get well, you can bet your sweet bippy (Laugh-in) that it will NOT be American Airlines.  We would walk, run, trot, ride a bike, drive a car, truck, go cart, boat, prop plane, call Uber, Lyft, crawl, or call any other airline on this planet before AA.

We have nothing (COUGH) else to report at this time except to wish everyone except American Airlines a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. What are we thankful for? Everything that is and ever will be.

Sad Day in Southerland Springs, Texas and the United States of America

My fellow Americans once again we have coward shooting at a church in Southerland Springs, Texas with 20+ dead including women and children. The shooter is dead after a short chase. Many details are still unclear.  The daughter of the pastor is reported to be one of the victims.

Our prayers and with all the victims involved in this tragic event.

We have nothing to add at this time but will be following events on CNN.

Folks, we can only say that until strong gun control is in place these type of incidents will continue and its up to us to get something done.  The WH, Congress, and Senate have their heads up their butts because the NRA donates big time to the GOP.  They hem haw around for a few days, then NOTHING gets done.  Call your representatives and DEMAND GUN CONTROL NOW!

Sad Day in New York City and all of The United States

SAD_USAMy fellow Americans once again we have a terrorist coward renting a truck and mowing down innocent bicycle riders on a bike path in Manhattan.  He drove and hit them from behind like the slime of the earth he is. Eight lost their lives and dozens more injured.  The New York City Police and FBI are on it and information is dripping in slowly.  He is not from NY and the FBI is in the area where he is from.  He jumped out of the truck holding a Paint Ball Gun and BB Gun probably hoping to be shot dead, but was shot in the abdomen by an alert NY Police Person.

Our prayers and with all the victims involved in this tragic event and we know that NY is strong.

Meditation Notes – Misc Mindfulness

Mindfulness Mediation can be broken down to two different styles that we know of.  There are probably a zillion more, but we are only going with two.

The first would be the Medical/Business, which is using the Meditation to control pain (Medical) and in business to relieve stress or clear you mind.  We have to admit using Mindfulness Meditation to control pain, once mastered, would be awesome.  We have read some articles where cancer patients have learned to control the intense pain with mediation (Scale of 1-10  20).  In business, from what we understand, Google employees have a Meditation Guru and they use the meditation to relieve stress and anxiety by breathing out the tenseness and relaxing.  This is good for the employee and boosts creativity in the work place.

The second is what we learned at The Insight Meditation Center in Redwood City, CA which is a Buddhist version for the mind, body, and spirit.  We also use this style when using Reiki Energy for healing.  Here when you are meditating and a thought comes into your mind and refuses to go away, you go deeper and determine what is causing the thought, then either work on the issue immediately or consider working on it at a later date.  An example would be you initially felt anger and when you went deep you found it came from a bullying incident when you were a child or from an event in the past.  This form of meditation is used to help yourself to clear out the crap you have collected throughout your life.  In Reiki cold energy is various part of the body is caused from specific emotions or past experiences.

So past experiences is what we are using Meditation to get rid of.  Think about it.  A a memory is an illusion.  So if you are getting angry from someone slapping you when you where a child, then you are living in an illusion. There is nothing you can do to stop the slap all these years later and the pain of the slap goes on because you are keeping it alive by thinking about it and reacting to it.  Just like when we quit smoking, when an urge from the past surfaced and we normally would go have a smoke, instead we recognized the urge, we talked to the urge by saying “You can hang around, but we choose not to smoke and will continue on by meditation.” The next time the urge came along we did not get an inkling to go have a smoke, we just noticed the urge and continued on.

So we are using meditation to move to “Live in the moment” because the past and the future are illusions and our only reality is in the now.  If you apply this to other people you will find that judgments go away. If you are judging someone based on a past experience then you are judging them on an illusion. Everything is in a state of change, in every moment, always, and in all ways so nothing is as it was.  People talk about peace of mind, or bliss, this is the way to get there.  It’s not easy, but the when you get there you will be grateful and thanks everyone you met along the way for helping you.

Meditation – Misc Stuff

Right off we want to say to the reader that anything we say here take with a grain of salt.  We are sharing our experience and if something we say doesn’t sit well with you then forget it or figure out a different way of doing something. For example, when we first started reading about meditation most of the “so-called experts” said to sit cross-legged, back straight, head tilted slightly done, hand in lap, and thumb and point finger touching.  This position made my back hurt after several minutes, or we would be concentrating on keeping a correct position that we could not focus.

“Our #1 suggestion – your meditation position is whatever position you feel comfortable in.”

I changed to sitting in a chair with my feet planted on the floor and my arms where they felt good, usually on my lap. My feet on the floor gave me grounding and if we were passing healing energy through our body we made sure to send some healing energy to mother earth through our Foot Chakra.  Mother Earth gets enough abuse by the inconsiderate anti-earth people she can use all the healing energy we can send. Most of the time we place my hands open on my upper legs so to complete a “circuit” of energy flow. These days we are usually sending energy throughout our body or to someone else who has asked for some Reiki Healing Energy.  If you’re not using energy then just get comfortable, even by laying down.  There are no rules, nothing is etched in stone.  If you wish to hang from a chandelier, then hang from the chandelier if that makes you comfortable.

The videos we post are to be used as assistance to your meditation.  We focus on the sound and choose to become one with the sound when fully focused. Which means the sound is effortlessly flowing though our body along with the energy we are sending.  If the video distracts you then don’t use it.  When we first started we focused on the flame of a candle, or a light down up in the sky, or just about anything that caught our eye.  Or just close your eyes, it’s as simple as that. Visualization is a big part of some meditations so closing your eyes helps in the beginning.

Now sitting there reading this take a deep breath, no so deep you pass out, but a fairly deep breath.  When you let the breath out feel the tension in your body flowing out with your breath.  Breath in positive energy and sit for a few seconds enjoying the release of tension.  Then take another deep breath and let go more tension. Feel it gushing out of your body and enjoy the feeling.  No one more and this time get ride of the tension in your shoulders on the out breath.  Yes, feel it leaving and taking what was left out of your body.  Sit an relax.  Nice huh?  So out breath goes the negative energy and the in breath is positive energy (we use love).  This is the basics of a mindfulness meditation process.  Normally breath and focus on the in-breath and out-breath.  When we say focus you choose to get to a point where that is all that is, your breath in and out.  We call this “being in the moment, nothing else exists.  The past and the future are illusions and this is our only reality.” We are deep in to our soul level and totally at peace with all there is.  Starting out you might not get deep in, but practice the breathing.  If during the breathing a thought come to mind.  Notice the thought, sit with it, because you know it will pass shortly as most thoughts do, and when it passes continue breathing.  If it does not pass, what we do is talk to it.  Yes we talk to the thought basically to recognize it or some might say to honor it.  Our purpose is determine why it is visiting us and just about every-time once we determine why it moves on and does not come back.

This is how we handled all the urges to smoke when we quit smoking.  The thought was an urge to smoke based on a certain event, and we basically greeted the urge and said to the urge “We usually go smoke a cigarette when you come along but today we are going to continue our breathing meditation.  You are welcome to hang around, but we will not pay any attention to you.”  After a few seconds the urge would pass and the next time the same event that triggered the urge came along we did not get the urge to smoke.   (It’s been 4 years and 10 months since our last cigarette)  See out quit smoking post for more.

This is all for today and we urge you all out there in cyber-land to practice every chance you get.  If you are driving be sure not to close your eyes, but you can still breath and when the police pull you over for swerving and have to take the DUI sobriety test, you can laugh at yourself BUT be sure to stay in the moment.

Meditation – Week 2 – My Experience Continued

We had a great response to week one, and the most asked questions was “Why meditate?”  So because we can only give you our perspective and our experience, we are going to include each week a part of the history of our journey, which includes other teachings, but the common thread is meditation.

A long, long, time ago in a land far, far away was a book store named The Lighthouse located in Crown Point, Indiana. The owners name was Heather Harder and on Friday nights after hours Heather opened the store to a group of folks interested in metaphysical discussions and demonstrations.  We remember this because of two bits of advice from Heater that we alway follow to this day and they are , “#1 No matter what metaphysical path you  choose to follow, always have fun with it.” and “#2 When you start gathering information from books, people, etc. take what you feel is good for you and disregard all the other stuff”.  The Friday night meeting was where my interest in meditation began, and having the opportunity to investigate Native American Drum sessions,  Circle Healing, Inter-dimensional Travel, Reiki Healing, Astrology (A current hobby), Astral Travel, and several other forms of metaphysical practices was awesome.

From then on we collected all kinds of various types of meditations mainly from reading.  We started to practice meditation mainly for relaxation but also to grow spiritually. We used meditation to clear negative energies, and when removing the negative energy fill up with positive energy. I can’t think of a better way to get rid of “stress”, mainly because we believe the person who brings on the stress can get rid of the stress easy.

When the panic anxiety attaches started instead of embracing the opportunity to get past it, we fought it in every-way we could think of finally settling on medication. We dumped the stuff we had learned and fought it for several years and then only day “out of the blue’ we started reading a book named “Many Lives, Many Masters.” by Brian L. Weiss M.D.  Looking back from today we know this book was sent to wake us up to continue our path and it did because we started meditation again and after a few years we were completely off the medication.

One point we want to make is the main use of meditation is to get to a point where you mind is clear of all thoughts.  Enjoy it and choose to take this clearing to every moment of your everyday life.  Why?  Because if you are clear and something comes your way that you are looking for you will see it without all the daily noise zipping through your noggin.

Orthostatic Hypotension in General

Medical Definition: Orthostatic Hypo-tension is defined as a decrease in systolic blood pressure of 20 mm Hg or a decrease in diastolic blood pressure of 10 mm Hg within three minutes of standing when compared with blood pressure from the sitting or supine position. is defined as a decrease in systolic blood pressure of 20 mm Hg or a decrease in diastolic blood pressure of 10 mm Hg within three minutes of standing when compared with blood pressure from the sitting or supine position. In laymen terms: Stand up from sitting position, blood pressure drops and heart beat increases causing dizziness which could lead to fainting.

When we were first diagnosed we reached a point where passing out was a weekly event, then after seeing neurologist that did the “table” test. They placed me on a table that tilted and hooked up a bunch of wires the tilted the table with the feet going down and the head be elevated. This created blood pressure and heart beat charts that concluded after a week of analysis that the patient had Orthostatic Hypo-tension. A preliminary teat was done at my primary doctor and this was done by nurse and I laid on the examine table and the nurse took my blood pressure and pulse. We waited two minutes and took the same readings which also showed high pulse and low blood pressure. Two table tests both came to same solution.

So what is the treatment for the cure?  There isn’t’ a cure but it can be managed.  Medication can take care of the dizziness but it’s not suggested because its a strong medication.  The best treatment is wearing compression stockings.

The doctor gave me the name of a medical store and the knee length stocking was $75.00!  I thought “No #$*&^% way am I paying $75.00 for stockings!” So I Googled it and low and behold just about every pharmacy in the universe carried knee length compression stocking for between $7.00 and $20.00″  They carry waist length also, but these are to warm to wear unless you work in a freezer where the temperature is below zero.

I started wearing the knee length stocking and now rarely do I get light headed and have not fainted.  I have talked to other people who say the parents have the same issue of light headed and after they get the stockings it basically goes away. When it gets hot in the house I do take them off because it gets uncomfortable in the heat, but then I get up slower and pay attention. If I get dizzy is sit back down and kick my feet back and forth to get the circulation going.

Then I found out that this is common for people who sit for long periods like office workers, pilots, truck drivers, etc. Most of the Uber drivers wear the stockings because they sit all day and they don’t get as tired.

Some of the Facebook people keep the stockings at work and put them on when the get to work. The Google folks not only put the stockings on but also have a special compression headgear they wear to keep the brain circulation going (rumor).

So for those folks out there where the older folks are having the dizzy issue try the stockings and see how great it works. If you sit all day doing your job, try it and see if you have more energy at the end of the day.
