Aviation Jargon — “Near Miss”

I was reading an article today about two commercial airliners almost crashing into each other.  It was described as “a near miss”.  Wouldn’t a “near miss” be a collision?  A “near hit” or “near collision” or “near crash” would be a close call.  We can only hope that the person that “coined” the phrase “near miss” does not work for the FAA.  Now there is a scary thought!

I live near SFO and where I live is near the “down wind” pattern of SFO.  The airliners fly overhead all the time and I myself have seen a few “near hits” with the many private aircraft flying in this area.  Not only is there San Carlos Airport, but Palo Alto Airport is also close.  All three are within 10-20 miles of each other and share air space. Then add to the fact that Moffitt Field (military) is in the mix.  Moffitt is just south of Palo Alto Airport and they normally don’t have much air traffic over in my area, but once in awhile an F-18 or military tanker will fly over.  The military aircraft always get my attention because they don’t have noise abatement devices and are very loud.  (I like these the best).  So with all this air traffic around close calls or a “near crash” is inevitable once in awhile.

Nothing to report at this time, but the next time a “near hit” occurs, I will report it here.

Thought for Today

  We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success;
We often discover what will do, by finding out what will do;
and probably he who never made a mistake never made a discovery.

“Samuel Saailes”

Nothing is better than discovery.
